ChatterArtists September 2011

So naturally with this month’s theme being Pets we are showing you some photographers who shoot animals and pets this month!

Michael Brian
I have never met Michael Brian but I love his work and the extensive library he has built of dog imagery. So much so, it was really difficult to pick just one image for you. When a photographer sticks to a particular niche, the way Michael has, it is inspiring to see the breadth of the work within such a focused subject matter.

On his website he says, “Whether it be a major ad campaign or a simple portrait, the sole purpose behind Michael Brian’s dog imagery is to raise the global consciousness to the magical gifts they provide for us, if we are willing to look beyond the obvious…” Michael is represented by Bruce Levin, so be sure to check out their websites, as well as Michael’s Blog, where you’ll find his regular feature “Dog of the Day.”

Donna Foster
I met Donna Foster a few years ago in Charlotte, NC when I was doing an event for the APA Chapter there. She was one of my consultations while I was in town and she specializes in portraits of people & their pets. It has been a few years since we met, but she has a new website and some lovely new work, so be sure to check it out. Donna splits her time between Charlotte, NC and Martha’s Vineyard from July through September. On her website it says, “Donna creates extraordinary images of pets and their people, photographs that reflect the personality of both humans and their pet companions and reveal the deep emotional connection between both.”

Gandee Vasan

Gandee Vasan is represented by my friends at wswcreative, and I absolutely love this guy’s dog and cat portraits! Gandee is of Indian descent, based in London, and draws heavily on both his Fine Art background as well as his many years creating conceptual advertising imagery. More recently, Gandee has done books of expressive dog and cat portraits and his work has been exhibited both at the National Portrait Gallery and the AOP (Association of Photographers) Gallery in London.

Keith Barraclough

Keith Barraclough certainly didn’t start out his photographic career shooting animals, but over the last several years he has been developing a relationship with the Discovery Channel and now finds himself shooting portraits of humans, dogs, cats and whatever else they might throw at him! Be sure to watch out for my ChatterCorner article in next month’s bulletin, which will be my interview with Keith about his recent assignment shooting portraits of all 164 Kennel Club dog breeds for Animal Planet. To see more about Keith and his work, go to his website and the Blog.

Hannah Kuo

Some of may recall Hannah Kuo from an earlier bulletin, and Like Keith Barraclough, she does not specialize in pet photography, but I loved this series so much I wanted to show you another image this month. This is a portrait from her series entitled “Greetings” in which the artist photographed couples with their pets and spent time with her subjects, selecting their wardrobe from their closets beforehand and then matching them with a vibrantly colored background. Hannah was born in Taipei, Taiwan, studied and lived in China for 14 years before moving to New York where she now lives in Brooklyn!

Lauren Grabelle

And last but not least, we have Lauren Grabelle who was also in a previous bulletin when we highlighted wedding photography. I am excited to feature her again because her first love is really photographing dogs, and in particular her own muse, “Sugar” – who is a very beautiful Weimaraner. Lauren approaches her pet photography with a loose and natural style and I was planning on showing a recent portrait of a fabulous tattooed owner with her furless dog! But when I saw Lauren’s photos of a rescued Alpaca called “Icicle” on her Blog – I simply had to share them with you instead, they were so funny! So whatever your pet pleasure may be, there is always a good image to be had!
